Treasures from north

Here is a sneak peak from an amazing treasure I managed to get my hands on a little while ago. Absolutely stunning pieces of leather that are going to be part of the new collection made in collaboration with the amazing Liisa Riski.

Reindeer leather is very soft and nice material and the best part of it is that it’s a very ethical product as well.

These reindeers have run freely in Finnish Lapland all their lives, eating food from one of the cleanest environment in the world. Once it’s their time to go, everything from the animal is used carefully and nothing goes to waste.

Ofcourse every single skin is not perfect, but lets face it, none of us are. Let’s embrace the little quirks and enjoy the life that has been lived happily and fully.

For me, this is a beautiful way to embrace and support this stoic northern land, which, I’m so very proud to say, is my home.

Unicorns in the studio

There has been so many new things going on and lot of very interesting collaborations and commissions.

Out of all, there was one order in April that was especially close to my heart.

I got commissioned to make two unicorn horn necklaces for two little girls who had been listening to a fairytale about unicorns.

The fairytale was invented by their imaginative father and was coming towards the end – so there was a plan to make the story a tiny bit more real by giving them necklaces at the end.

We thought about the different material options and in the end decided to use reindeer antler with some semi precious stones to give a little bit of colour and to be able to tell which one belongs to whom.

I think all of us could do with a little magic in our lives and get some fairytales to come alive – even if it’s just for a little bit.

My Boutique N

Many wheels have turned forward and some dreams have come true during the last 12 months. One of the biggest one is my little studio-boutique that I opened in Helsinki in September, it’s located in the heart of Helsinki in the beautiful old part of town called Töölö.

I’m sharing the space with another jeweller and I also stock some carefully chosen pieces from other selected designers.

Starting all over again in my home country has been very exciting and scary at the same time. So many new things, ideas and designs – on top of all I have only one idea in my mind. I love my job!

Soul bird – Sielulintu

20121222-221758.jpg
The Soul bird is known in Finnish mythology as a powerful creature that was believed to bring his soul to a child when he was born and taking it to a safe place when a person died. It was also believed that it was good to have a wooden soul bird on top of the bed to protect their soul while one was sleeping, so it wouldn’t just wonder away. This powerful symbol has had a very strong meaning for people to protect the closest and most personal things in their life.

I find old mythology very interesting and it has impressed me many times. So now was right time to design a piece that would work as a power amulet in modern life, something that would give a person the final kick to jump in something new and bring him towards new adventures. In this piece of jewellery I have used the raven as an inspiration. Ravens look so strong in their black feathers, and they have been magical powerful animals in many cultures throughout time. I attached this powerful bird to a weapon that is known as Thor’s hammer, a power amulet that belongs to the god of thunder. With this on your neck, you can move mountains and win over your greatest fears…

This is the story behind this beautiful series of pendants that fits both smaller and bigger souls…
